Choose the Right Performance Fabric
I kick-started a Facebook live challenge recently - I went on video live every day for a week! It was nerve-wracking but I did it! Why was I so inspired? Because I had a burning urge to let the world learn about performance fabrics! (Want to watch? Click each video to watch the whole series. Video 1, Video2, Video 3, Video 4 and Video5. While you're there, give me a like on my page!) Choosing the correct fabric for a sofa is a subject that comes up on the daily with my clients. If it's not kids, it's pets or both and that's the perfect storm for disastrous spills, sticky hands, and stinky paws. If you’re like me, you've got a perfect storm brewing around the corner every day when school lets out - and it used to be Hello, Hurricane Mess, goodbye nice furniture. Now, though, instead of compromising and getting a dark ultra suede or a leather sofa, you can pick a performance fabric and confidently step up your sofa game. Some characteristics you'll absolutely LOVE about performance fabrics:
are stain resistance
odor resistance
easily cleanable
These are all a plus in homes with kids and pets... right?
Good, Better, Best Fabric Choices
There are multiple choices from some of my all time favorite fabric companies. I'm going to break it down for you into Good, Better and Best fabric choices.A GOOD choice is an aftermarket service for your sofa. You can hire a third party to come to your home and have the sofa treated. They send a technician to your home to apply the finish to your already made sofa. Some great options are Fiber-Seal® and Ultra-Guard. They have great support and teach you how to properly clean stains. If it's a stubborn stain, they have technicians who will come out and help you remove the stain. The downside to finishes applied on top is that it will wear off over time. But there is always the option to retreat.A BETTER choice are fabrics that are treated after the fabric has been made in a controlled environment. When it's done in a controlled environment, the finish is evenly distributed. This process is done prior to the sofa's construction. Some good options are Teflon® and Nano®. These are branded finishes that stand behind their product. Once again, the downside to finishes applied on top of the fabric is that in time it will wear off. But can be treated again after the sofa has been made. Ask for these finishes by name - not all finishes are created equal. The BEST choice is fabrics that are treated on a fiber level. This means the fibers of the yarns are treated while the fabric is being produced. The reason this is best is that this protective finish will not wear off over time. The stain repellent and odor repellent properties stay intact for the duration of the piece. Some examples are Sunbrella® and Crypton®.If you would like to learn more about what types of fabrics will best suit your budget and lifestyle, contact me to set up a design work session. We will review all of your needs and I'll give you helpful solutions. I have some tricks up my sleeve and just so you know, a custom sofa doesn't mean it comes with a custom price tag.Come home to a place you love everyday!
