Healthy Bedroom Makeover, One Room Challenge Week 4
Week 4, One step forward, two steps back. There was some progress and without fail some hiccups that came up along the way. One was out of my control and the other completely within my control (changed my mind). Yes, that happens!First, if you're not caught up or out of order with my One Room Challenge. Start here WEEK 1, WEEK 2, WEEK 3. It's a 6-week challenge to re-do one room. I decided to makeover our master bedroom. Along with that, I added another challenge. To create a healthy bedroom by selecting items that are Non-Toxic or Green. In doing so, I still needed to adhere to a budget. Having a target budget I implemented a good, better, best option. I will explain more next week (WEEK 5) on how I came up with my good, better, best option for some of the pieces that were selected. Before I get into what didn't happen let's review some PROGRESS. My custom drapery and roman blinds were completed and installed in a week! That is unheard of. Working with multiple trades can get tricky. Aligning everyone's schedule and getting the material on time is magical. Check out below and my facebook video. Bruce is a pro and loves to share his knowledge.
I'd like to take a moment and say Buh Bye old blinds that NEVER worked and was made of MDF. MDF is typically made with an adhesive that contains high levels of Formaldehyde. This is A BIG NO! NO! When it comes to a healthy bedroom makeover. I'm happy to replace it with natural materials that DO NOT contain formaldehyde.
Hello to my new, 100% natural Bamboo woven roman blinds.
THIS IS a MUST! When installing custom drapes it's crucial to leave the tie-in for at least 3 days minimum. Like Bruce says "It's like a curler in your hair, you're setting your curls. Training your drapes to hang properly" Here he is in action my Facebook page
2 steps back
1. WallpaperThankfully, I have the wallpaper in hand but the adhesive that was sent to me (3 in 1 adhesive) from AFM was NOT ENOUGH! Oh no, now what do I do? O.k. it's only week 4, I've got 2 more weeks. BUT, No installer wants to waste time. Of course, I don’t blame them, time is money. Plus he was not charging me. I felt awful about wasting his time. He was confident that the typical adhesive he uses contains NO FORMALDEHYDE or any harmful chemicals. I did my due diligence and went online to find the SDSs(Safety Data Sheet)for Shur Stik 785 but NO LUCK I could not find anything about it. I followed up with a call to the company that makes it. Unfortunately NO return call. I needed to act fast! I e-mailed AFM and requested they send me 2 gallons. I got confirmation they will be sending the right amount this week. Now that fire is out I can at least admire the rolls of wallpaper. 2. ARTI know in week 2, I said art was easy peasy to pick. Insert foot in mouth, I changed my mind. I love the image of the Joshua tree but felt it was not art that my husband and I naturally gravitate towards. We both LOVE abstract art. I also felt the Joshua Tree image is something I would appreciate seeing at a boutique hotel, not in our master bedroom. I knew the art would get old and I would replace it fairly quickly. That is not GREEN! In true designer fashion, I went down the art rabbit hole and picked some black and white abstract art. I pulled it together quick, showed my husband and he just rolled his eyes and said whatever. O.K., guess he's not too concerned what I pick? This is completely out of character? But it may be my crazy, he was not willing to entertain. Which is good because I changed my mind AGAIN! I looked again and found the perfect piece not only is the art perfect. The shape was just what I had imagined from the beginning. You can see this in WEEK 2 with the space plan images. I originally wanted a long rectangle that was installed on a landscape format.
Let me know which one you would have picked in the comments below?
In the last 4 weeks, I've accomplished the following.
Design (including colors and most pieces picked)
Ordering all materials, plus art, and nightstands
Coordinating the materials in coming and into trades hands
Got my accent wall prepped for wallpaper
Drapes and roman blinds produced
Drapes and roman blinds installed
Waiting, Waiting, and more Waiting.
What I'm patiently waiting for
Art to be made and sent to me. This should be sent on October 30th.
Custom upholstered bed to be made. This should be completed October 26th and installed on October 29th.
Nightstands to be made and sent. This should be on its way by October 25th and received by October 31 or November 1st. This one is traveling from the East Coast.
Wallpaper to be installed. This should be installed by October 27th or 28th.
Onto Week 5! Next up is bedding and décor. Not going to lie, I'm having a tough time nailing down organic bedding that I like. Luckily I know someone that will be creating a bedding line SOON! For now, I may need to get something that is NOT organic at least for the shams and duvet. Wish me LUCK! Only 2 more weeks left. Eek!
