Healthy Bedroom Makeover, One Room Challenge WEEK 3
If you're catching this challenge out of order you can go back to WEEK 1 I WEEK 2 and get caught up.
"California Dreamin" Healthy Master Bedroom Makeover, Implementation starts NOW!
The design plan "California Dreamin" vibe was born last week. But the plan to create a Healthy Master Bedroom was from the get-go. If you’re a week behind get caught up with WEEK 2 HERE. This week is about planning yep, MORE planning! Yeah, it's great I've got all the design elements picked out but NOW the REAL work starts. I need to place orders, confirm shipping dates, expedite materials, and coordinate all of my trades. All the while, coordinating in the order that makes sense for this room to come together without a hitch. It would be SUPER silly of me to have my brand new custom drapes hung before getting my walls primed and skim coated for the wallpaper. In all interior design projects, there is an order to the process.
Healthy Master Bedroom Makeover, the materials. "What's it made of"?
Healthy Master Bedroom Makeover, the materials. "What's it made of"? In this world of Eco-Friendly, Non-Toxic, and Green design. There is a lot of crossover and misinformation out there. There is also this thought process that if it's green, or non-toxic it will cost more. I'm here to say it's NOT always the case. In my quest to better inform others I will be building a good, better, best option when it comes to green and eco-friendly. In most cases, there is not one material that checks off all of these needs or wants. But there is a way to create a good, better, best and reach our goal. Whether it's to be green or create a healthy home. It's possible to have a killer room without the killer chemicals.Drapery Fabric "What it's made of"? is made of Cotton/Linen blend. Both are natural materials which speak to the healthy part of the design. It's not GOTS certified nor is it organic. But for me being a natural fiber is a step in the right direction. MOST importantly NO flame retardants are used on the finish of the fabric.Roman Fabric "What it's made of"? is made of a 100% natural woven bamboo. Again this is a natural material that is not only a healthy material It's also a sustainable material. These Romans check the Green and the Healthy Room boxes!Wallpaper Prep Materials "What's it made of"?Murco All Purpose Cement Compound "What's it made of" Starch, Calcium Carbonate, Perlite, Mica, and Clay. What it doesn’t have is Silica which is hazardous to breathe in.AFM Transitional Primer "What's it made of" Modified Acrylic Emulsion, Copolymer, Nepheline Syenite, Water, Titanium Dioxide. Non-photochemically reactive. What it doesn’t have is Ammonia that most primers have. Both products mentioned above are 100% NON-TOXIC. I have asthma and any type of strong smells can affect my breathing pretty quickly. Last night both my husband and I slept in our room with the AFM primer and the Murco Cement Compound applied onto your wall. We both woke up feeling fine. Outside of the aftermath of the Santa Ana winds the other day. My husband Steve has been hammered with allergies because of outside elements. But Inside we're ALL GOOD.First, I need to lay down the groundwork. There is wallpaper behind the paint on the existing wall that we will be wallpapering. Yes! Someone painted over the wallpaper! I didn't catch this since the original paint had a texture. The seams of the wallpaper went un-noticed. BUT when we had the room painted a year ago we went with a MUCH lighter color. With the lighter color paint the seams of the wallpaper appeared and VERY much noticeable. My type A tendencies went into full effect. Why the heck did they paint over it? A year later I'm doing it. But doing the reverse. Since budget and time is NOT on my side my Type A personality will be taking a back seat. I've decided to resolve it by skim coating the wall. You see I need to create a smooth surface prior to installing the new wallpaper. Thankfully with the help of Murco and AFM. I can skim coat my wall without being exposed to any hazardous toxins. My painter needs to prime the wall first with AFM Transitional Primer. Then apply the Murco All Purpose Cement Compoundthen apply another coat of theAFM Transitional Primer. My painter started the job yesterday and will be completed today! Next is the WALLPAPER! I'll get into that one next week.
Check out Manny working his magic and making the wallpaper seams disappear.
Raw materials are trickling in! It's on!
First to arrive is the drapery fabric from Fabricut. That same day I popped that roll into my car and brought it to my workroom. NO time to waste. Plus my workroom hero Yolanda was waiting for fabric from other projects that were delayed. Whew, thank goodness those where delayed. Otherwise, I would have been behind some other projects and miss my deadline for installing next week. I got confirmation the drapes will be done by next Monday! Bam one week turn time! Oh, wait one more step that needed to happen last week. The rods! Those needed to be ordered since they are custom rods. I could have purchased store bought rods but they would not have been strong enough to hold the weight of the fabric plus one of my pet peeves with store-bought rods is the telescoping function. The rings that attach to the drapes to the rod get hung up on the transition. The final plan for this to all come together is to schedule my installer to come and install them.Yesterday was the jackpot! No, not the $900 million dollar Mega Millions jackpot. I ONLY wish! My jackpot was receiving the bamboo Roman's, Fabric from Revolution Fabric for the upholstered bed AND the Wallpaper. Week 4 will be in full effect with getting this custom bed made. The frame should be getting made right now. At least I'm hoping. My upholster likes to keep me on my toes. I call him DAILY! He's SO NOT sick of me yet.Week 3 is rolling along nicely. Week 4, I will talk about the making of the NON TOXICupholstered bed and maybe reveal the drapes and the wallpaper. MAYBE? Not sure since I would like to create that HGTV feeling of the BIG Reveal.
