This was my first time attending one of the largest furniture and décor markets in the world to discover the 2018 Home Design Trends at High Point Market. I was excited to see the latest and greatest and meet my fellow designers from across the country. This particular market is at High Point North Carolina, known as the High Point Market. The city rolled out the red carpet for over 70,000 attendees. The market takes over the entire city and covers 10 million square feet of exhibition space with roughly 2000 exhibitors in 180 buildings. Whew, that was a lot to tell you already! Now imagine how much I discovered in 7 days. I was inspired and excited to discover new lines to inject into my projects.
There are two strong 2018 Home Design Trends throughout market: (1) organic and earthy and, (2) bold and beautiful. I truly enjoyed both trends individually but was most excited to see some brands really mix the 2 together. As most of you may know I have a passion for mixing styles!
Organic and Earthy Home Trends
Let’s start with the organic and earthy home trends. It is all about natural plant fiber materials, repurposing reclaimed wood, and texture! This is right up my alley since I am now officially a member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council. More about that another time, I plan to write about my eco-design journey and share it with you all soon.
Natural Plant Fiber Materials
Lots of different natural plant fiber materials are used to make rugs and pillows. Some materials used to make these beautiful rugs and pillows are Sisal, Pineapple, Bamboo, Abaca, and Ramie. It may not look like it, but some of these materials are really soft to the touch. Abaca plant fiber materials are a perfect example of this softness.
Reclaimed Wood Products
Reclaimed wood was a common thread throughout the High Point Market. Examples of repurposing reclaimed wood are shown below. Some of the more popular woods used are oak, pine, and teak.
Texture is the new black! If texture could be added to a piece it was. Fabric wrapped furniture, metal with etched patterns, and mixing materials to create interest are examples of how texture is being used for 2018 Home Trends.
Organic and earthy go hand in hand with a neutral color pallet. When I walked into the E.J. Victor’s showroom my mind was blown. Here is a taste of Kelly Wearstler’s new collection. Dramatic but chic with some bold touches.
Bold and Beautiful Home Trends
The bold and beautiful home trends are taking familiar pieces from the past and modernizing it with fabric and color. COLOR is a staple for this trend! I was excited to see this throughout the market. Colors ranged from soft pastels to shockingly vibrant. There are NO rules to mixing color! Velvet, in all colors, was the choice fabric for sofas, dining chairs, and accent chairs. It added luxury with a pinch of attitude. Patterns of all shapes and sizes were littered throughout. Again this mix of pattern is NOT a science, it’s purely a feeling. That feeling of love! “If you love it, it will work”!
Today’s traditional pieces have been updated by adding a modern flair to freshen up the look. I have a feeling traditional is making a come back VERY soon. I’m a modern girl at heart but I do appreciate seeing a sprinkle of traditional when presented in a new light.
Velvet is a great example of a yesteryear fabric that is popping back onto the scene, a nod to traditional fabrics. However, this time around instead of the rich colors you typically see, the colors range from rich to lively pop colors! I’m still holding out on some great printed velvet stripes to re-do my dining chairs. I may be seeing it soon!
Color, it’s a thing and its here to stay! Notice pastel fabrics mixed with pop colors. It’s a fresh take on color and I’m excited about it. There really are NO rules! The only rule is to have FUN! Not only are colors being mixed but also prints are being mixed. It’s definitely a more-is-more look. But with my streamlined style, I prefer to pull back and there are great examples of a pulled back look with pops of energizing color.
After an exciting 7 days of market learning, discovering and making lifelong friends, I am equipped with the best of the best and have a direct link to all of the new and upcoming brands along with the heritage brands to bring my clients the best selections.
