“Wallpaper is dead dead DEAD, darling – paint treatments are here to stay.”
“Grey is in, warm tones are OUT – if you have gold in your home, you’ll be sorry!”
“You need a pop of color – like a hot pink pillow! – in every room or you’re missing out big time.”
These rules – oh, these rules. They’re created by well-meaning interior designers, decorators, and armchair HGTV fans to share a commonly held idea, but rules like these are more damaging than helpful!
If you’ve got a dining room with tastefully selected wallpaper, and you hear that it’s got to go? This “advice” only serves to make you feel nervous and bad about your home’s décor. Hello, design shame!
Guess what, friend? I’m going to let you in on a little secret the other designers don’t want you to know – There ARE NO RULES.
Sure, there are building codes and local laws you have to abide by – no one wants their house to burn down – but beyond that? The sky’s the limit.
I’m here to give you the permission to like what you like – it’s your home and your life, so why shouldn’t your aesthetic and lifestyle play a huge part in that?
You want to incorporate the pieces you’ve loved since college into your living room bookshelf styling? Permission granted.
You’d love to have bright, cheery paint in a teensy tiny powder bath? Permission granted.
You adore toile and chintz and want to use these in your more modern guest room? Permission granted.
It’s all in the way you make things work, really, but I need to let you know, dear design fan – it’s your home, your taste, your life. Never let the old, stuffy RULES get in the way of it! Free yourself of design shame and love the way you live.
