If you need a sofa, heed these 3 words of advice before beginning your Sofa Shopping – Know Your Options!
Shopping for the perfect sofa can be a total pain – you already know this, though, right?
✓ You’ve gone the traditional route of shopping in person
✓ You’ve checked out a few websites
✓ You’re feeling overwhelmed with ALL of the choices or lack thereof
✓ The fabric choices offered are horrid or worse
✓ The size doesn’t work for your existing space
Ughh.. what do you do now?
This is where you need to know your sofa options. I break the sofa options into 3 categories: (1) Mass Market Sofas, (2) Semi-Custom Sofas, and (3) Fully Custom Sofas.
Mass Market Sofas
Mass Market Sofas are just that – you can buy the same sofa in about 500 different places ranging from traditional retailers to giant web-based retailers – think IKEA or Pottery Barn. If you’re lucky, you can see and touch the actual piece at a retail location. Most likely, you won’t come across the one you saw from the internet in person. These sofas are often cheaper, but are you sure you can trust that the color will look like what you imagined from the image on the screen? Do you know that the sofa is made of materials that will last? And can you be sure it’s going to be comfortable? Are the sofa fabrics environmentally safe for your family? When you go this route, you’re taking a huge risk. If your main objective is to save money and it’s for a playroom or a room that gets little to no use, and you don’t mind taking a gamble, then Mass Market Sofas are a great choice for you.
When it comes to Semi-Custom Sofas, you have more choices. These manufacturers offer several different fabric choices and sometimes different insert choices and leg choices. You can add nail heads, fabric finishes and so on. Each manufacturer has different offerings when it comes to their bells and whistles that they stock. Keep in mind – inventory is the reason why they can offer these bells and whistles! These manufacturers choose a select amount of fabric, hardware, and inserts to accommodate their line of furniture. Their offering of bodies (sofas and chair styles) are limited to what is in their line. Remember – this is still a factory, so they need to keep things moving to make money. They can only provide a handful of styles so they can turn out items quicker rather than every piece being custom produced. If you want to elevate your space a bit more and make some customizations to better reflect your style, semi-custom sofas are the perfect way to go about it.
Fully Custom Sofas
Fully custom sofas sound crazy expensive, doesn’t it? Guess what – it doesn’t have to be! Like any business, there are different models. One upholsterer may choose to use ONLY the best of the best, but there are others that choose to use basic but still good quality materials. Both use different construction methods – one may require more labor and more materials, the other a little less labor and fewer materials. (Digging into the difference between the 2 is another blog in itself – prepare for a lot of technical terms that may bore you to sleep, though.) Custom sofas take a little longer, but these pieces stand the test of time and the results of getting a sofa just the size you need in a fabric you absolutely love is priceless. My motto is “Custom without the custom price tag”. If you want something that’s JUST RIGHT that will last, this is your best choice – it’s made just for you!
